Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan launched G-Ride, a digital ride sharing platform designed and deployed for the IT industry by the Group of Technology Companies (GTech), the industry body of IT companies in the state.

The G-Ride app automatically matches co-workers and neighbours and help them travel together to work. It is available in Android and iOS versions.

SHARE OPTION

Several IT companies in cities like Bengaluru, Chennai and Noida already encourage car-pooling and ride-sharing.

“The target is to bring down the use of vehicles by half,” said Hrishikesh Nair, Chief Executive Officer, IT parks, Kerala.

Alexander Varghese, Vice-Chairman; Vijay Kumar P, Secretary; Renjith Ramanujam, CEO, Gtech; and representatives of the industry were present at the launch ceremony at the official residence of the Chief Minister.

K Nanda Kumar, Chairman, Gtech, said that large number of professionals in IT industry drive or ride to work, as they find this most convenient.

“Ninety per cent of them drive alone. This will change as G-Ride gives them the option to offer friends and colleagues a pick-up or to hitch a ride with someone in the neighbourhood.”

DIGITAL RESOURCES

According to the Chief Minister, easing traffic, tackling parking woes, reducing fuel consumption, lowering pollution levels and providing convenient modes of transport are areas of high priority.

“We need to explore citizen driven models enabled by technology to achieve these goals. G-Ride will be a model for the state.”

The state government will accelerate deployment of disruptive digital resources in development initiatives and also in addressing challenges facing people, Vijayan said.

M Sivasankar, Secretary, IT, Kerala said that digital technology determines the pace and direction of development.

G-Ride will be a hit among IT professionals who are proficient in devising and also using such platforms, he added.
