An Automated Mail Processing Centre (AMPC) is being established near Shamsabad on the city outskirts by India Post for speedy sorting and delivery of mail, a senior official said today.

The proposed centre — the third to be set up in the country after Delhi and Kolkata — at an estimated cost of Rs 80 crore, will be ready in the next one to one-and-a-half years, Chief Postmaster General (Andhra Pradesh Circle) B. V. Sudhakar told presspersons.

“Land for the centre has already been procured. The proposal has been forwarded to the Expenditure Finance Committee (EFC) and once it gets clearance for funding, the AMPC will be commissioned in the next one to one-and-a-half years,” he said.

Once the AMPC is installed, there will be no documentation required with respect to sorting, despatching and delivery of mail.

The AP Circle has 16,142 post offices and the total number of accounts operated in the State is 3.5 crore, with the deposits against these accounts at Rs 28,475 crore, he said.

India Post has tied up with the AP Government to extend the ‘Mee Seva’ citizen service initiative through 2,437 computerised post offices. The trial run began last week, Sudhakar said, adding the payment of benefits under ‘Bangaru Thalli’ — girl child protection scheme — and the ‘Abhaya Hastham’ scheme for women self-help groups, will be implemented shortly.
