The Sensex and the Nifty ended the session near flat in the absence of directional cues.
The 30-share BSE index Sensex ended up 11.44 points at 25,561.16 and the 50-share NSE index ended up 16.05 points at 7,640.45.
Among BSE sectoral indices, metal (+2.46 per cent), power (+2.36 per cent) and consumer durables (+2.11 per cent) remained investors' favourite. On the other hand, realty (-0.77 per cent), oil & gas (-0.42 per cent) and auto (-0.16 per cent) indices fell the most.
Hindalco, Tata Power, Tata Steel, Coal India and NTPC were the major Sensex gainers, while the major losers were M&M, Bajaj Auto, GAIL, Maruti and TCS.
European stocks were down in the wake of the new sanctions announced by the US and EU on Russia. The Stoxx Europe 600 Index lost 0.53 per cent by 10.43 am. in London. Standard & Poor’s 500 Index futures slipped 0.4 per cent.
Among the Asian indices, Japan's Nikkei and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended down. Nikkei 225 was down 9 points at 15,370, Hang Seng fell 30.73 points to 23,492.55 and ASX 200 was up 3.57 points at 5,522. The Shanghai Composite Index slid 0.6 per cent.
