A one-man inquiry commission has been constituted by the Tamil Nadu Government to look into the causes of the collapse of an 11-floor building, which has resulted in the death of 55 people.
According to an official press release, Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa has appointed retired High Court Judge R. Raghupathy to head the commission.
The commission will study the causes and circumstances leading to the structure crashing down, fix responsibility for negligence that led to the death and injury of construction workers, and recommend measures to avoid such incidents in the future.
The State Government will take further action based on the findings of the commission.
The building under construction by a private developer at Moulivakkam, near Porur, on the outskirts of Chennai, crashed to the ground on June 28. So far 27 people have been rescued from the debris.
The State Government has announced a compensation of ₹7 lakh to each the families of the dead from Tamil Nadu and ₹2 lakh to those from other States and ₹50,000 for the injured.
