Visiting Argentinian President Mauricio Macri on Tuesday said his nation looks at New Delhi as a “partner for the future”.

Buenos Aires is seeking to strengthen trade ties based on the principle of complementarity with New Delhi, the visiting President said.

Addressing a trade summit here after a stopover in New Delhi where he met the Indian leadership, Macri said he has had five meetings with his counterpart Narendra Modi in a relatively short time.

“We see India as a partner for the future,” he said, stressing the relationship is based on complementarity, where the Latin American nation can help with food and energy resources for India’s large population. He marked out services, information technology, tourism, mining and renewable energy as the potential areas to deepen the trade ties between the two nations.

Macri said Argentina is fast integrating with the world and its attempts have been appreciated by the world at large which is embracing it. He asked businessmen on both the sides to seize the opportunities that exist, affirming all the support from the policy makers. He said companies should also look at opportunities beyond their domestic borders while taking their calls on investing, including addressing the broader opportunities in Asia and the Americas.

The visiting president said across his interactions with Indian leaders, he has been made to believe that reducing social inequalities is shared challenge.

Addressing the event, leading industrialist Adi Godrej said the bilateral trade currently stands at USD3 billion. Indian exports include information technology, agrochemicals, pharma and cosmetics, while Argentinia exports vegetable oils, soyabean and sunflower oil to India.

So far, domestic companies have invested USD 1 billion in sectors like IT (TCS),auto (Bajaj Auto) and pharma (Glenmark), he said, adding his consumer goods company Godrej also has investments in the South American nation.
