The Karnataka Government will initiate steps to rejuvenate around 12,000 tanks in rural areas.
Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of a programme here on Monday, H.K. Patil, Karnataka Minister for Rural Development and Panchayat Raj, said that around 18,000 tanks in the State are almost dead.
Steps will be taken to revive such tanks in rural areas. As a first step in this regard, the Government will initiate the process to revive 12,000 tanks during the current financial year. It expects to complete the work on 6,000 of these tanks during the current year, he said.
Many tanks in the State are vanishing because of various reasons. Land meant for natural water tanks are encroached upon in many cases. Steps will also be taken to clear encroachments in such cases, he said.
