The West Bengal Government is likely to sign an agreement with the Centre for carrying out optical fibre network laying across its villages this month.

According to Susanta Majumdar, Secretary, Department of IT and Electronics, West Bengal, a memorandum of understanding (MoU) will be signed soon between the State and the Centre to connect the villages up to gram panchayat level with optical fibre network.

“It will take about four years to complete the project as part of National Optical Fibre Network (NOFN). It will be a boon to small-scale industries (in the rural areas) to access technology and common facilities with more internet penetration,” Majumdar told reporters here on Wednesday.

He was speaking on the sidelines of Confederation of Indian Industry’s seminar on opportunities with information and communication technology and electronics.

Asked about a previous conflict between the State and the Centre over “right of way” while laying optical fibre, Majumdar that said the MoU will be signed with an agreement that Centre will bear the cost of restoration of the dug-out areas.
