Athleisure is the trend du jour and the word on everybody’s lips. It has largely been influenced by the world of running, polo, rugby and even football. Sneakers, joggers, jersey-inspired t-shirts, sporty jackets have become mainstream. But the dark horse of this trend is the understated allure of golf fashion. Long considered the game of the elite, golfers exude a certain discreet elegance. Isha Bhansali, celebrity menswear stylist, is all praise for this quotient, “When people talk about men’s fashion, they mostly refer to three-piece suits and related accessories. However, these very suited gentlemen move to the golf course sporting polos and pleated trousers effortlessly. In my opinion, golf fashion is the coolest, yet the most elegant style. Three key pieces to keep in mind — a well-fitted polo tee, a pair of gorgeous pleated trousers and, of course, sneakers. These days, however, you can add a modern touch to your look by adding a quirky pair of sneakers.” In the pleated trousers department, there are two warring factions. While traditionalists will vouch for the elegance of pleated trousers out on the green, many men are switching to slim chinos, thereby rendering the silhouette more contemporary. Women opt for slacks, shorts or even skorts on warmer days. Golf dresses are quite popular.

Function over style

Golf has evolved greatly from its early days, when Scotsmen donned tweeds and tartans with thick shoes. Ritcha Verma, street style and luxury blogger comments, “Today’s golf style is, understandably, a far cry from what it used to be. Golfers are now opting for highly functional blends. While the colour palette is largely traditional, modern golfers are taking the liberty of sporting brighter colours. However, the ubiquitous argyle is an important element of a golfer’s wardrobe.”

Stripes, checks and prints Another micro-trend among golfers are bold trousers — striped, checked and even finely printed. Polos tend to be played down in a more subtle, even solid, format. Verma adds, “Men and women are going all out, even going as far as layering smartly. This includes trendy sports shirts, with a visible spretzzatura vibe, all-season jackets, trendy V-neck pullovers and fitted windbreakers.” You are still required to wear proper golf shoes, which are comfortable enough and resistant to elevation change.

Style tips for the modern golfer

Pleated trousers are traditional, but slim chinos are trendier.

Golf courses expect you to have ‘anything with a collar’. Therefore, the unmistakable polo is at the very core of the golfer’s wardrobe. Modern trends expect you to experiment. Opt for an argyle print in a flamboyant colour palette. Fit is of utmost importance.

A statement belt is a good accessory to have, since your shirt is always tucked in. A good idea though, is to match your belt to one of the colours on your shirt/polo.

If you’re playing in a more tropical part of the world, shorts are a good option over trousers.

The golden rule of pairing shirt and trousers — Statement trousers with a simple top and vice versa. Avoid print on print or check on check. It will just lead to too much clutter in your look.
