Cummins’ high horsepower engines plant goes on stream

Engines and gen-set manufacturer Cummins has inaugurated a new plant to make high horsepower engines at its mega site in Phaltan. The seventh factory to open at the location, this is Cummins’ largest high horsepower manufacturing site in the world.

The plant that will build the QSK 23 Tier I and II engines imported till now from Komatsu Ltd., Japan, can produce 3,000 units per year initially. The capacity can be increased if the demand grows beyond this. It will also manufacture QSK 23 Tier IV and QSK 60 engines that will comply with the 2015 emission norms, in the near future. This entire range caters to the power generation, mining, industrial, construction, and oil and gas sectors, for both domestic and global markets.

“The mega site was conceived six years ago to house ongoing and future expansions of the Cummins Group in India,” said Anant J. Talaulicar, Managing Director, Cummins Group in India. “This new facility positions us well in the export markets as the economies begin to recover,” he added.

The modern lean manufacturing facility spans an area of 39.5 acres and includes engine assembly, testing, painting and machining. Adopting green building practices, operations inside the plant have replaced the conventional hydro dynamometer technology with eco-friendly AC dynamometer technology which helps reduce water consumption and prevents energy loss while testing engines. Once fully operational, the plant will employ around 350 people.
