With the automobile industry gearing to meet more stringent norms for fuel efficiency, emissions and safety over the next four years, Hyundai Motor India says it is comfortably set to meet the deadlines.

With a line-up of 10 passenger vehicles starting with the small car Eon to the premium SUV the Santa Fe, the Korean car manufacturer has over 70 variants on offer. More are in the pipeline such as the SUV Tucson and the premium Elantra by the year-end.

Young Key Koo, Managing Director, Hyundai Motor India, said in an interaction with BusinessLine that the company will target the top of the line in standards for these norms. By October, the authorities plan to introduce fuel efficiency star ratings, and by October next year more stringent safety norms will be in place.

In 2020, the country will graduate to directly BSVI emission standards from BSIV now in vogue without transitioning through BSV. This is a huge jump the company cannot afford to miss and will have to follow, he said.

Regarding the fuel efficiency star ratings, the company is targeting the top four- and five-star ratings for its line up of 10 products. The numbers are yet to be finalised but the company is in line with the deadline and is working closely with the R&D, Koo said.

On the safety systems, Hyundai is in line with the requirements from January-February 2016. It has started offering driver and passenger side airbags as needed, he said.

On the BSVI norms, the Kappa engine used in A and B segment cars and Epsilon engines are “well ready to meet Euro VI”, but we need some investment and there is no problem, Koo said.

The Korean car manufacturer is the second largest OEM in India after Maruti Suzuki. It estimates that it will sell 6.65 lakh units, including exports in the current calendar year. “That is our target and production volume,” he said. In 2015, it sold about 6.45 lakh units.
