Maruti Suzuki’s Vitara Brezza has been ruling Indian roads in the compact sports utility vehicle (SUV) segment since its launch in March 2016. The company said it has sold more than 1.75 lakh units since then, and the numbers are growing month on month.

“Vitara Brezza marked our entry into the popular compact SUV segment, and has sold over 1.75 lakh units in less than 18 months, averaging a monthly sale of over 9,000 units,” RS Kalsi, Senior Executive Director — Marketing and Sales, MSIL, told BusinessLine .

Kalsi said Brezza has some attractions, such as class features, personalisation, better fuel efficiency and an attractive price as a singular package that customers look for these days.

Powered by a 1.3-litre diesel engine with 89bhp and 200 Nm of torque, the Brezza is only available with a diesel engine and manual transmission right now; despite this the company has managed to garner many awards.

Petrol version coming The company is expected to launch the petrol version as well as an automatic transmission option of the vehicle in the future.

Going forward, Maruti expects to maintain per-month sales of the Brezza, which is one of the biggest contributors to its overall sales. Brezza’s closest competitor — Ford EcoSport — sold around 68,000 units between April 2016 and August this year. Hyundai Motor’s Creta, available in both petrol and diesel variants, is also preferred by many who want a model that is a bit higher than a compact SUV.

All in all, competition is set to rise in this segment in the near future, say analysts, as many compact SUVs are set to be launched, including the Tata Nexon and Renault Captur. While the Nexon will be launched on Thursday, Captur will be unveiled on Friday.

The prices of both the upcoming compact SUVs are expected to be around the same as the existing competitors, said the analysts.
