Taxi aggregator Ola wants to tie up with the Maharashtra government to train 20,000 youths in five years. They will be trained as micro-entrepreneurs in the transportation business, said a press statement issued by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis’ office.

He has directed officials concerned to prepare an action plan in the next three months.

The statement said the company had approached the State government with a proposal to participate in the skill development programme. In the next two years, the target is to develop 10,000 youths as transportation professionals, the statement said.

The Chief Minister had recently chaired a meeting where broad guidelines were drawn for searching competent candidates, providing training and skill enhancement programme. Officials from Skill Development, Transportation and other departments were present to facilitate the process with the company’s officials, the statement said.

The statement said Ola has managed to provide jobs to 5 lakh youths and has created 4 crore customer capacity in a short time. The taxi service, which currently is present in more than 100 cities, plans to expand its operations to other areas. Last month, the company had tied up with 35 training centres in the country and plans to train 50 lakh youths in five years.

The skill development programme is not just for churning out drivers, but is also aimed at developing transport sector professionals, who are technically and physically competent and who will take up professional and societal responsibilities, the release said.

A complete curriculum of passenger transportation sector will be taught to the youth. They will also be taught to use smart technology, the statement added.
