Prospects of commencing the Rs 4,000-crore L&T port-cum-shipyard at Kattupalli in North Chennai, have brightened following the State Government’s instructions to the company to absorb some more people from the local community.

“The State Government’s statement is a positive indication of the commencement of the project any time,” said an industry source. Company officials declined to comment.

While the company is ready with the required infrastructure for over six months, it is waiting for the final word from the State Government for formal inauguration.

Officials from multiple departments, including industry and fishery held discussions with the construction major on January 1 and 2 on providing jobs to the local people, who have been alleging that their livelihood will be affected due to the project.

Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa in the statement said that the construction of the project is at a final stage. L&T had earlier given jobs to 220 fishermen, and agreed to absorb another 850 people during the former Government’s rule. However, this did not happen.

When the present government took charge last February, the company offered jobs to another 131 people. During the two-day long discussions, the company officials have agreed to provide jobs to 120 more. Of this, half will employed directly and another 60 will be employed on completion of a training programme.

L&T will also set up a training institute in three months. It will increase daily wage for workers by Rs 20-30, the statement said.

All the required infrastructure have been put in place to commission the ship building and a container terminal. The Customs department too has given its nod for handling containers in the terminal.

The project has been set up by L&T along with the Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation in two phases.

The project, just adjacent to Ennore port, has come up on 1,200-acres about 30 km north off Chennai.

The facility will have port and ship-building facilities mainly for Defence requirement.
