Nine more cities, including Silvassa, Erode, Moradabad and Itanagar, will now be part of Smart Cities Mission, increasing the total number of such cities to 99.

The names of the nine cities were announced here on Friday by Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs Hardeep Singh Puri.

The government didn’t announce the 10th smart city as Shillong is yet to submit its proposal. “We have kept one slot for Shillong,” Puri said.

In the Round Four of the national smart cities challenge, Silvassa in Dadar and Nagar Haveli topped the list of 15 cities competing for the 10 spots, followed by Erode (Tamil Nadu), Diu (Daman and Diu) , Biharsharif (Bihar), Bareilly (Uttar Pradesh) , Itanagar (Arunachal Pradesh), Moradabad (Uttar Pradesh), Saharanpur (Uttar Pradesh) and Kavaratti (Lakshadweep).

Proposed investments

With 99 cities now part of the Smart Cities Mission, the total proposed investment in these cities is estimated to be ₹2,03,979 crore.

“The nine cities selected have proposed an investment of ₹12,824 crore of which ₹10, 639 crore would be in Area Based Development (ABD) and ₹2,185 crore in pan-city initiatives which would impact 35.3 lakh persons living in these areas,” added Puri.

The newly announced cities will have approximately 409 projects. The funding sources for these projects is proposed to include contribution from State and Centre (61.25 per cent), convergence (24.19 per cent), PPP (12.90 per cent), the SCM’s own sources (1.57 per cent) and other sources (0.09 per cent).

“So far 85 out of 90 cities already selected have incorporated their SPVs and 61 cities have procured PMCs; another 8 cites are in various stages of hiring their PMCs,” the Minister said.

The total of 2,948 projects worth ₹1,38,730 crore are in the various stages of implementation, according to an official release. About 189 projects worth ₹2, 237 crore have been completed, and implementation is underway for 495 projects with a cost of ₹18, 616 crore. Also, tenders have been floated for 277 projects with a cost of ₹15, 885 crore and 1,987 projects worth ₹1,01,992 crore are at DPR stage.

Liveability index

To make cities more ‘liveable’, Puri also announced the commencement of the Liveability Index Programme in 116 cities. The programme seeks to develop a common minimum framework for cities to assess their existing status and chart their path towards better quality of life.
