Union Minister of State for Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare Sudarshan Bhagat inaugurated the ‘Pollen Collection Chamber’ and the National Hybridisation Garden (NHG) at the Sugarcane Breeding Institute here last week.
The NHG, where sugarcane planting operations is mostly carried, and the pollen collection chamber supports the breeding programmes of Sugarcane Research Stations located across the country
Later, during an interactive session with the scientists and staff of ICAR institutions in Coimbatore such as Sugarcane Breeding Institute, the Central Institute for Cotton Research and Central Institute of Agricultural Engineering, the minister urged the scientists to focus on technologies that would help reduce cost and increase productivity.
“Sugarcane could play a significant role in achieving the Prime Minister’s vision of doubling the income of Indian farmers, provided improved cane varieties are evolved to tackle new challenges such as climate change and less water availability,” he added.
