The proposed bifurcation of Andhra Pradesh will lead to severe water shortage and more demands for the formation of smaller States, according to Y. S. Jaganmohan Reddy, President, YSR Congress Party.

Addressing a large gathering at the L. B. Stadium as part of the ‘Samaikyandhra Shankavaram’ a public meeting organised in support of a united Andhra Pradesh, Reddy said no irrigation project or reservoir, including Srisailam and Nagarjuna Sagar, will be able to stock sufficient water in the event of the State’s bifurcation.

“Karnataka and Tamil Nadu have serious disputes over water now and a similar situation will emerge in Andhra Pradesh if a separate Telangana is created,” he said, adding that for development it was vital to keep coasts and cities together.

Package unacceptable

Taking strong exception to the idea of a package for the Seemandhra region, he said any such package will never be adequate and will not be able to compensate for the loss. The campus placements in the State had already come down from about 50,000 earlier to 20,000, he added.

The move should be politically defeated in Parliament. “We should win 30 seats (to Parliament) from Andhra Pradesh and stall the process,” he said.

Congress President Sonia Gandhi was ignorant about the State’s culture when contemplating the bifurcation proposal, he added.
