The GreenCo rating system, now in a pilot phase in the country, has attracted diverse set of industrial groups and manufacturing companies who have either already been rated or are in the process of having their facilities rated.

“Within a short period of the rating system launched by the CII-Green Business Centre in India, more than 18 companies have been GreenCo rated of the 39 companies who have registered. In addition, more than 75 companies are working on this rating system. This has never been tried anywhere else in the world,” S.Raghupathy, Executive Director of CII-GBC, said.

“The CII believes that GreenCo rating system would play a catalytic role in greening the Indian industry, paving the way for India to become one of the leaders in Green Business by 2022,” he added.

Redesign The GreenCo Rating system leads to redesign of processes, resource conservation, waste management and reduction of green house gas emissions, all improving the company performance and ensuring sustainable growth.

The objective of the rating system is to create a framework to define and assess how green the company is and also bring to the fore how it can improve its performance. The general area of focus while companies get rated is on energy and water conservation, waste management and use of alternate energy sources, all aimed at improving performance.

Best practices Some of the best practices adopted by various companies towards conservation are being documented and shared through the CII GreenCo Forum. This would enable other companies to look at replicating some of these practices, he said.

Godrej & Boyce, ITC, Brakes India Ltd, Vasavadatta Cement, ACC, JK Tyres, ThyssenKrupp, L&T, Sundaram Fastners, Kirloskar Brothers and Bangalore International Airport Ltd are among companies who have gone through the rating process.

Vasavadatta Cement, which has completed the rating process, has managed to bring down energy consumption by improving its operational efficiency and has saved about Rs 1.8 crore in an year. The Bangalore airport has saved about ₹1.4 crore during one year by better managing air-conditioning and lighting system and adapting energy conservation measures, Raghupathy said.
