The ranking of States on ‘ease of doing business’ will be released by the World Bank and not the Department of Industrial Policy and Promotion (DIPP) which anchored the entire exercise.

“The World Bank together with a professional agency could release the ranking of States on ‘ease of doing business’ this week,” Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said at an industry event organised by CII on Thursday.

While the move ensures that the ranking process meets global guidelines, it will also protect the Centre from criticism from States that fare badly, a DIPP official had told BusinessLine .

Earlier this year, the DIPP had released the parameters of measuring performance and the eight areas based on which States were to be ranked. However, Sitharaman said at an event on Wednesday that the DIPP had only given inputs for the survey.

Sitharaman said that she was hopeful that India’s performance would be “better” this year in the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business’ report as the government has taken several steps in this direction. India is ranked 142 among 189 nations in the World Bank’s ‘Ease of Doing Business 2015’ report, two notches lower than the previous year’s.

“Last year, there was a debate as to why India fared poorly in that (ranking). With the slew of steps, this year we hope India would be ranked better,” Sitharaman said.
