In a major bureaucratic reshuffle across key Ministries on Wednesday, the Appointments Committee of Cabinet has given additional charge of the Telecom Ministry to IT Secretary Aruna Sundararajan, while Sanjay Mitra, Secretary, Road Transport Ministry, will take over as Secretary in the Defence Ministry.

Sundararajan (Kerala: 1982) will replace PK Pujari, who was till now functioning in the DoT, in addition to his post as Power Secretary. She comes in at a time when the industry is going through a tariff war between Reliance Jio and other incumbent players, such as Bharti Airtel and Vodafone India.

The Department of Telecom (DoT) has been seeing frequent changes in the top bureaucracy after JS Deepak was suddenly sent as India’s representative at the World Trade Organisation on March 1.

Meanwhile, Mitra, (West Bengal: 1982) will take over as Secretary, Ministry of Defence on completion of tenure of the present incumbent G Mohan Kumar on May 24. He has earlier had a seven-year stint as a Joint Secretary in the Prime Minister’s Office headed by Manmohan Singh.

Rajive Kumar (UP: 1981), Secretary, Ministry of Shipping, has been given additional charge as Secretary, Ministry of Road Transport & Highways, “until further orders or till appointment of a regular incumbent, whichever is earlier”, the ACC said.

Rashmi Verma, (Bihar: 1982), Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, has been made Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, while Jagdish Prasad Meena (Assam:1983), Special Secretary, Ministry of Food Processing Industries, has been appointed Secretary, Department of Consumer Affairs.

Anant Kumar Singh, (UP: 1984), Additional Secretary & Financial Adviser, Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, is now Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, while Brij Raj Sharma, (JK: 1984), has been appointed Additional Secretary, Ministry of Home Affairs.

Rakesh Srivastava, (Rajasthan: 1981), Member Secretary, National Commission for Backward Classes has been appointed Secretary, Ministry of Women & Child Development, in the vacancy caused due to appointment of the present incumbent Leena Nair, as Secretary, Ministry of Tribal Affairs.
