The Parliamentary Committee on Empowerment of Women has urged the Indian Railways to explore the possibility of conducting a special recruitment drive to induct more women. Noting that women form only 6.7 per cent of the total workforce of over 13 lakh employees in the country’s largest public sector undertaking, the committee said, “The Railways should chalk out a well-defined policy to make the service more attractive to women employees…” According to information given by the Railway Ministry, the maximum number of women (78,889) is employed in Group C Staff, followed by 8,945 women in Group D, and only 1,503 in the Officers Group A & B.
