High standards are required by industry for goods to be more competitive and penetrate new markets, Commerce Secretary Rajeev Kher at an event here on Thursday.
“Standards play a significant role in enhancing competitiveness in the global market. A new architecture of global trade is evolving and it’s important to elevate ourselves in terms of standards and technical regulations for good and services,” he said at a Confederation of Indian Industry event.
Kher said access to highly discerning markets would improve if quality of goods and services improve due to growing competitiveness, the lack of which had been a factor in declining Indian merchandise exports.
There was a need to create an institution to help adopt such standards, he said, adding that “Zero effect, Zero defect” was key for the success of the ‘Make In India’ campaign.
