The Ministry of Urban Development has launched a mission to generate 100 MW of solar power in the next two years through roof-mounted solar panels, a statement from the Ministry said.
The Central Public Works Department (CPWD) and Solar Power Corporation of India (SPCI) of the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy Sources have signed a memorandum of understanding in this regard.
According to the agreement, CPWD will provide 629 buildings owned and maintained by it in 18 States for installation of solar photovoltaic panels on rooftops by executing agency SECI.
A total roof area of 16,76,233 sq mt is available on these buildings, of which 60 per cent will be used for power generation. The solar panels will be connected to the grid, the statement added.
To begin with, solar panels of 1 MW capacity each will be installed over government buildings such as Nirman Bhawan, Krishi Bhawan, IP Bhawan, Vidyut Bhawan, and Shram Shakti Bhawan, within six months.
