Jasmine prices have increased a tad following Ramzan demand; but still exports to the UAE are low due to inferior quality.
The fragrant flower is being cultivated over 20,000-and-odd acres of land. This can be cultivated on any soil, but requires water and adequate sunshine.
Due to a prolonged dry period, the production of the flower has dropped. Muthuswamy, a grower and President of the Sathyamangalam Flower Growers Association, said: “Of late, water is a scarce commodity, we are spending huge amount for the water but are getting poor quality. Due to use of such water, we are getting poor quality flowers.”
He said: “Till last week, prices were ₹110 a kg and now, due to festive demand prices is at ₹180-190.”
Bulk vendors said that they are receiving orders from all over Erode and parts of Coimbatore district. In addition, some buyers form Bangalore and Mysore purchased the jasmine.
Muthuswamy said the price may increase in mid-August as the Tamil month Aavani starts.
The price of Arabian jasmine, another fragrant flower, was at ₹160/kg against ₹90 last week.
