Despite poor arrivals, jaggery prices decreased in Erode markets. On Saturday, only 1,500 bags of jaggery (60 kg each) arrived for sale. But the main bidder, authorities of Palani Murugan temple, quoted ₹1,710 and purchased 650 bags.
Some others procured 250 bags. Palani temple authorities said that they are in need of huge stock of jaggery, but farmers are not willing to sell at a lower price Traders said that they are expecting demand to pick up from first week of October and the price could rise to ₹2,000 a bag. The jaggery season begins from October and demand for the same will remain till mid-January.
