Pepper prices continued to plummet on high selling pressure from Karnataka where harvesting has reached its full swing. Karnataka is offering now at ₹540 a kg delivered anywhere in India by rail. Contractors who have bought standing crops in Karnataka are harvesting them now. As they are not plucking the spikes selectively, the bulk density of the pepper is below 500 GL. At the same time, improper drying has raised the moisture content to 14.5 per cent also, trade sources there claimed. On the terminal market 47 tonnes were traded at prices ranging between ₹570 and ₹585 depending upon quality and area of production. Spot prices fell sharply further by ₹1,000 a quintal today to ₹55,900 (ungarbled) and ₹58,900 (garbled). Export prices are at $9,700 a tonne c&f prompt shipment while March and April shipments are at $9,650 and $9,500.
