With the official data required for only December, it is now clear that tea prices in India’s auction centres increased in calendar 2016 over 2015. According to Tea Board, prices in all auctions centres rose to an average of ₹134.51 a kg between January and November 2016 from ₹123.91 a kg in Jan-Nov 2015.
This increase of ₹10.60 marked a growth of 8.55 per cent. In the North Indian auction centres, prices rose to an average of ₹144.73 a kg from ₹139.68. Helped by increased demand and short supplies, prices rose sharply in South India. Till November, in the south Indian auctions, prices rose to an average of ₹103.41 a kg from ₹80.53.
