Turmeric prices increased in Erode markets on Friday on the back of fresh demand from North India.

“Local traders have received fresh demand from North India, so they quoted higher price. They bought over 60 per cent of the stocks that arrived. Turmeric price is higher in the Nizamabad and Sangli markets and also, only medium variety turmeric was kept for sale here. So, traders in North India have placed fresh order for Erode turmeric. Since only medium variety hybrid finger turmeric was on offer, prices dropped by ₹700 a quintal. About 70 per cent of hybrid finger turmeric was sold. Buyers procured all the 200 bags of hybrid root turmeric,” said RKV Ravishankar, President, Erode Turmeric Merchants Association.

Till May-end, sales and prices are likely to rule steady. From June, fresh orders may flow in for Erode turmeric and prices may increase. At the Erode Turmeric Merchants Association sales yard, the finger variety turmeric was sold at ₹4,899-6,981 and the root variety ₹4,639-6,679 a quintal.
