The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) said the Unstructured Supplementary Service Data (USSD)-driven mobile banking platform is not very popular and it is working on alternatives.
USSD is used by GSM mobile phones to communicate with the service provider’s computers. It is available on 2G networks for banking and other data-related services.
NPCI MD and CEO AP Hota told mediapersons at the FIBAC Conference that currently only 40,000 transactions take place daily using USSD, while NPCI had planned for a million transactions a day.
Therefore, NPCI is working on an app for use on smart phones. For areas with poor telecom connectivity, voice-driven applications could be launched in two months.
