YSR Congress leader Jagan Mohan Reddy, along with two members of Parliament belonging to his party and other leaders, was detained at the Visakhapatnam airport on Thursday evening, as the Opposition made his intention known that he would head for the Ramakrishna beach here to lead a silent, candle light rally seeking special category status to Andhra Pradesh.

Y.S Jagan landed was told by the police that no rally would be allowed on the beach road or anywhere in Visakhapatnam, as the Republic Day was being observed and also the two-day CII partnership summit was scheduled to begin on Friday morning. .

Earlier, AP Director-General of Police N. Sambasiva Rao also issued a statement urging the protesters to postpone the programme and that no rallies would be allowed. Y.S Jagan and the other YSR Congress refused to budge from the runway and they were forced after sometime to go near the arrival lounge.

Several YSR Congress leaders were taken into preventive custody in the city, as they were heading for the Ramakrishna beach. Right from the morning, there was heavy deployment of the police, blocking entry to the beach road, and only the residents were allowed near the beach. Several youths and other activists were taken into preventive custody to foil the proposed protest rallies.
