Aravakurichi, Thiruparankundram and Thanjavur Assembly constituencies in Tamil Nadu will go to polls on November 19 this year with counting of votes scheduled for November 22, the Election Commission (EC) announced on Monday.

Aravakurichi and Thanjavur could not go to polls with the rest of the State in May this year as the Commission felt that the conditions for holding elections were not right then.

The EC deferred the dates of polls in these two Tamil Nadu constituencies as it felt that the election process could not be allowed to proceed and ought to rescinded so that "elections could be conducted de-novo when the atmosphere would become conducive for holding of free and fair elections after a reasonable lapse of time."

In Aravakurichi constituency, the Commission had felt that atmosphere had been “seriously vitiated” due to unlawful activities of candidates and political parties by “bribing” the voters, EC had said in its order deferring the polls.

The three Assembly constituencies are among the four Parliamentary constituencies and 10 Assembly constituencies in Assam, West Bengal, Madhya Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Puducherry, Tamil Nadu and Tripura where elections will be held on November 19. Counting for all the Parliamentary and Assembly constituencies will be taken up on November 22, the Commission announced.

Nellithope Assembly constituency in Puducherry, Khowai and Barjala Assembly constituencies in Tripura and Baithalangso Assembly constituency in Assam will also go to polls on November 19.

Coochbehar and Tamluk Parliamentary constituencies in West Bengal and Lakhimpur Parliamentary constituency in Assam will also go to polls on November 19.

The Commission has set November 2 as the last date for candidates to file their nominations with the last date for withdrawal of nominations on November 5. "The Model Code of Conduct shall come into force with immediate effect in the district(s) in which the whole or any part of the Parliamentary/Assembly constituencies going for bye-elections in included,” the Commission said in a statement.
