The proposal to grant additional floor space index (FSI) for industrial units within the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) in the recently unveiled industrial policy may also be extended to those outside, Maharashtra Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan has said.

“There is a request that additional 0.5 FSI should also be granted to industrial units outside of the MIDC,” Chavan said, adding that the request will be considered. He was speaking to reporters after discussions with industrialists and businessmen from Pune in a meeting organised by the Mahratta Chamber of Commerce Industries and Agriculture (MCCIA).

The new industrial policy, that is still to be approved, will be effective for a five year period beginning April 1.

On the issue of Special Economic Zones (SEZ), Chavan said that as the withdrawal of tax concessions had rendered them unattractive for industries to set up units in them, the State was studying the issue. While industries who wanted to continue would be given all encouragement, the land that was lying unutilised after being acquired by either MIDC or private players will have to be disposed of judiciously, he said.

Maharashtra had a total of 124 approved SEZs, of which 29 have either been de-notified or approval has been cancelled. Of the remaining 95, eighteen SEZs are currently operational, and 38 have been notified. Notification of 39 is still due.
