A national board for sugarcane pricing, which would fix “realistic price” for growers, is on the cards. The move follows a suggestion by a committee of State ministers to scrap the existing dual authority mechanism for sugarcane pricing through the constitution of a national-level body. The Food Ministry, which accepted the recommendations, will, improve upon the methodology suggested in determining a realistic cane price.

KFC seeks time to reply to show-cause

Kentucky Fried Chicken, which was served a show-cause notice by the Bangalore Municipal Corporation, has requested the corporation for a copy of the report of the test carried out by the public analyst which found the chicken served at KFC “adulterated, misbranded and unfit for human consumption.” According to the analysis, KFC’s chicken has a high percentage of monosodium glutamate (2.8) against one per cent recommended by the Prevention of Food Adulteration Act.

Panel opposes move to privatise insurance sector

The Rajya Sabha committee on petitions has vehemently opposed the privatisation of the insurance sector saying the time has not yet come for departing from the nationalisation objectives of the sector. In its 102nd report, tabled in the Rajya Sabha recently by its chairperson, Mrs. Sushma Swaraj, the committee said the insurance sector is one of the most capital-intensive sectors and is required to meet social obligations. The committee feared that these social obligations would largely be neglected by the private sector because meeting social obligations is not a profitable proposition.
