Sugar prices: Action will be spelt out in two days, PM

The Prime Minister, Mr. P. V. Narasimha Rao, announced that the Union Government had decided to “allow import of about 600,000 tonnes of sugar, and that is on the way.” Asked about the steps being taken by Government to curb the spiralling prices of essential commodities, especially sugar, Mr. Rao told newsmen at the airport before emplaning for Delhi that “I am still grappling with the sugar situation. We will authoritatively tell you in the next two days what is being done.” Mr. Rao said the Government had decided to allow import of 5-6 lakh tonnes of sugar

US insurance cos seek clarifications

While the American insurance companies see tremendous opportunities for investment and growth in India, they are seeking clarification from the Government on the recommendations in the Malhotra Committee report regarding foreign insurance companies. A number of grey areas concerning foreign firms exist in the report, say insurance industry sources, which, with greater transparency, can enhance investor confidence in the Government’s intentions to open up the financial services sector.

Call for Central PSU strike on July 14

Various trade union organisations have called for a general strike in the Central public sector undertakings on July 14 to meet the growing threat of privatisation and delay in wage settlement and bonus. More than 100 delegates from most of the public sector undertakings met here for two days this week to discuss the matter and decided to mobilise the workers, against what they termed ‘anti-people,’ “anti-worker’ and ‘anti-public sector’ policies of the Centre.
