With reference to the editorial, “Making in India” (September 23), Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s effort to make India the manufacturing hub of the world is desperately needed to save our industrial sector and address the employment needs of millions of Indians. Every effort must be made to eliminate corruption, red tape, nepotism, undue delay in project clearance, high taxes and an anti-industrial atmosphere. Those who come to do business in India must go with profits and peace of mind.

The problem of low growth is due to the invasion of Chinese goods which with their lower prices are destroying the Indian manufacturing industry. People talk about Chinese incursions in Ladakh, but they do not care about the Chinese goods that have reached every rural shop, apart from occupying prime shopping space in the urban sector. The solution is to scale up the units of production, match the Chinese goods in price and improve quality. To achieve this we need to create a forum of experienced industrialists who can advise the Government on the steps to be taken.

The top corporate heads responding positively to Modi’s call for ushering in the ‘Make in India’ movement in order to give a boost to the manufacturing sector, is encouraging. At present, importing goods and commodities whether ordinary or sophisticated is leading to a shortage of foreign exchange and fall in manufacturing and job opportunities.

The manufacturing sector is the backbone of an economy — it creates jobs, helps development of downstream industries, contributes to the exchequer in the form of taxes and helps develop infrastructure. The downturn was caused also by a slowing global economy. Now that the US and world economy in general are in growth mode, it should help the sector. The regulatory hurdles have to be streamlined and the framework should facilitate investments. The Government has also to streamline taxation laws which are a big deterrent to foreign investors.

Orbiting history

India is on the verge of creating history as it endeavours to become the first country to enter the Martian orbit on a maiden mission. The operation critical to the mission was executed flawlessly by ISRO on Monday. The big test will come on Wednesday when the main procedure is carried out and the orbiter is out of earth’s visual and communication range. The final journey is been followed with bated breath not just by Indians but by the global community.

Good call

The call for independent directors in public sector banks has not come a day too soon (“Boardroom blues” by KR Srivats, September 23). The other day the RBI governor rightly appealed for more autonomy in the functioning of PSBs. The presence of a reasonable number of truly independent directors is essential for improving the functioning of PSBs. Needless to say, the mind-boggling accumulation of NPAs is a major threat to Indian banking. Board members have a duty to ensure the quality of loan portfolio. An independent director should not become a white elephant or a parrot in the golden cage.

Solar blues

Something strange is happening with solar power. There is demand, technology, finance, and lots of fallow land available. But what’s lacking is direction from the Government. Just look at the plethora of rules and regulations and the multiplicity of institutions and departments — TNREC, MNRE, Tangedco, TNEB, TEDA, to name just a few! If evacuation infrastructure is made available and pricing is left to market forces, with an enabling environment by creating a single point of contact, huge capacities can be built virtually overnight.

Boost manufacturing

India needs to promote the manufacturing sectors in a big way as there has been were too much emphasis on service sector growth in the past three decades. Reaching out to corporates to induce manufacturing activities through the ‘Make in India’ campaign is a progressive step.

Take a cue

“At IIT-Madras, innovation is a part of learning” by Mahima Jain (September 23) made for a fascinating read. Studying and scoring in the examination is not the be all and end all; turning the essence of learning into practicality is imperative. Students need to be encouraged to evince interest in innovative things by prevailing upon them to put their ideas into practice to enable them to invent new things. Other premier institutions may take a cue from IIT-Madras.

Curbing black money

It is learnt that India will support the proposed international automatic exchange of tax and banking information to discourage Indians from earning black money and stashing it abroad. It remains to be seen how the Government buttresses this plan by actions. The fiscal deficit in the country, which has been a thorn in the flesh of the Government, can be reduced considerably if the step clicks.
