In a mid night drama, four employees of the Japanese two-wheeler major, Yamaha India Ltd, at Oragadam plant involved in the ongoing strike were arrested from their residence at around 1.30 am this morning.

The arrest was initiated by the police after a few workers climbed on to mobile towers during a protest on September 26, said S Kannan, Kanchipuram District President of CITU, representing the striking workers.

"High level repression has started by Tamil Nadu Government. We seriously condemn the arrest," he told BusinessLine.

A tweet by CPI (M), Puducherry, said that the protest will intensify with the police arresting more than 500 workers when they staged a protest near the Kanchipuram bus terminus. They were then let off. The arrest follows a strike at Yamaha's plant about 60 km west of Chennai.

Trouble at the plant started on September 22 due to a sudden sit-in strike following the termination of two workers belonging to the newly-created India Yamaha Motor Thozhilalar Sangham (India Motor Workers Association), which is being registered. The workers were allegedly terminated for approaching the Labour Department to discuss matters related to their welfare.

Backing the two, 800 permanent workers went on a sudden strike and even slept inside the factory last night as a mark of protest. However, over 2,000 contract workers continued to work, sources said.
