Coffee Day Fresh & Ground, the retail arm of coffee firm Amalgamated Bean Coffee Trading Company (ABCTL), selling filter coffee powder, is eyeing a revenue of Rs 150 crore over the next three years, as it plans to expand its presence in the North, beginning with Mumbai.

The Bangalore-based company also runs the popular coffee retail chain Cafe Coffee Day, which operates 1,300 outlets.

After establishing a strong foothold in the South, the company is making inroads into Mumbai as it targets a niche customer base of South Indians in the megapolis.

“We were getting a lot of demand from Mumbai and Delhi, but we first wanted to establish in the South. We thought if we can build a strong presence in Tamil Nadu (which consumes close to 1.2 tonne coffee each month, we can do it anywhere else,” Coffee Day Fresh & Ground president Mr CJ Jayanth told PTI here.

The per capita consumption of coffee in the country is estimated to be 80 grams, which is very low going by the global standards.

The company will open 10 Fresh & Ground stores in the Maximum City this year, with each store costing Rs 2-3 lakh, he said.

“We will open these stores wherever there is a large South Indian population,” he added.

The filter coffee powder arm of ABCTL operates 425 exclusive outlets in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala.

“Our turnover is about Rs 120 crore. In the next three-five years we are expecting at least 20-25 per cent increase in sales,” he said.

Unlike Cafe Coffee Day that is positioned in the premium coffee segment, Fresh & Ground caters to the mass market and sells its products directly to consumers and hotels, restaurants and cafes (Horeca), apart from institutions.
