The East Coast Energy Pvt Ltd is likely to resume work on its thermal power project at Kakarapalli village in Srikakulam district in spite of stiff opposition from sections of local people and environmental activists.
The company recently signed an agreement with the Central Power Distribution Company Ltd. of Andhra Pradesh for sale of 300 MWs as soon as the power plant begins generation.
Initially, the company will generate 1,320 MWs. The agreement, valid for 25 years, fixes the tariff at Rs 3.44 per unit, according to sources.
According to the sources, the company will supply power to various organisations with the support of the Power Trading Corporation of India Limited.
“We have urged the State Government to ensure law and order so that we can take up construction of the plant afresh. We have all the approvals but a section of people are trying to disrupt the work,” said P.V.N. Raju, vice-president of the company.
The company has taken up construction of 250 more flats for the employees to be recruited soon. Local leaders are, however, opposed to the resumption of work and they have said they will stop the company vehicles.
