DFG, the German research foundation, has expanded its India presence with the formal launch of a centre in Hyderabad today.
DFG has approximately Rs 14,000-crore funds to support all branches of science and humanities in both Germany and through bilateral science and research collaborations with several countries. With India, it is funding projects to the tune of $8-9 million.
Dr Torsten Fischer, Director of DFG India based in New Delhi, said with the collaboration of the India's Department of Science and Technology, about 40 bilateral research projects in science and engineering are underway.
Two international research training groups have also been started at the University of Hyderabad.
Talking to Business Line , he quoted a recent DFG study to say that nearly 20 per cent of all cited international publications of Indian scientists have been written with Germans.
Germans have even overtaken their British colleagues in this. US remains the top country in terms of collaborative research and publications.
He identified agriculture sciences, chemistry, material sciences, earth sciences and biotechnology as important fields in which joint research with India would be supported.
The Hyderabad centre will have both the DFG and the Goethe-Zentrum offices.
