The Japanese engineering major, Hitachi, is interested in bringing monorail-based public transportation system to Chennai, its officials said today.
Speaking to journalists on the sidelines of a meeting of a visiting Japanese delegation with the officials of the Tamil Nadu Government, Mr Yoshitaka Hirabaya, General Manager, Global Rail Business Development Division, Hitachi, said that monorail was superior to the ‘metro', both in terms of technology and cost. The meeting was organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry.
Since the monorail runs on a track beam guideway rather than a railway track (as in the case of the metro rail), it uses a lot less of construction material, resulting in a 30 per cent saving in cost.
Importantly, the monorail can run on sharp curves, which means that putting it through congested cities is easier than to put a metro rail system.
