Dry continental westerlies and low humidity should go to ensure a weatherwise uneventful night for Chennai, venue for the finals of the IPL cricket tournament.

Chennai Super Kings, the hosts, will take on Kolkata Knight Riders in a high-voltage match scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. tonight.

A trough of lower pressure had cut a path across Rayalaseema in the neighbourhood as it lay extended from Orissa in the northeast to Lakshadweep in the southwest.

India Meteorological Department in its 24-hour outlook issued last evening had hinted at the possibility of thundershowers for the southern metropolis.

But this morning’s wind map indicated that the trough may have weakened, and prevailing winds have shifted to being westerly-to-northwesterly.

At the time of going to press in the afternoon, prevailing winds are west-southwesterly, with the mercury having peaked to 41 deg Celsius.

Humidity is at a low 30 per cent; dynamic weather models are suggesting that the night skies would stay partly clouded.

There may be a slight increase in humidity; but not enough to trigger precipitation.
