The Lafarge Research Centre, of the multinational Lafarge Group, has funded a concrete performance and durability testing laboratory at the Indian Institute of Technology Madras.
Dr Pascal Casanova, Director, R&D Group, Lafarge Research Centre, based in Lyons, France, said the research collaboration with Lafarge funding and know-how is the first of such collaborations in India. Lafarge has provided Rs 1.5 crore for the testing laboratory.
The first of its projects is to study the carbonation of concrete, a five-year project aimed at reducing concrete corrosion. The laboratory has been established at the Department of Civil Engineering.
Mr Casanova said Lafarge has one of the largest research budgets in the industry with an expenditure of about 1 per cent of its turnover, over €150 million. Extending the life of concrete, apart from the economic benefit, holds significant environmental advantages as buildings will not have to be replaced.
Prof. V.G. Idichandy, Deputy Director, IIT Madras, said the collaboration with Lafarge Research Centre strengthens the ongoing research and teaching capability in construction and concrete-related areas.
