The Rs 1,400 crore construction equipment maker TIL Ltd will complete commissioning of its fifth plant at Vidyasagar Industrial Park in Kharagpur in April 2013.

Located nearly 100 kilometres away from Kolkata, the 104-acre plant will manufacture Reach stackers, in collaboration with North Carolina-headquartered Hyster, and entail an initial investment of Rs 100 crore.

“We will start operations at the Vidyasagar Industrial Park plant by April, 2013. Initially, we will invest Rs 100 crore only for the crane factory,” Mr Sumit Mazumder, Vice-Chairman and Managing Director, TIL, told the newspersons here on Friday.

The Kolkata-headquartered infrastructure major would shift its rough-terrain crane manufacturing facility to the forthcoming unit at the Vidyasagar Industrial Park, Mr Mazumdar added.

On the company's another newly-commissioned facility at Changual also in Kharagpur, Mr. Mazumdar said TIL would invest nearly Rs 300 crore in four phases at the plant by 2015.

The first phase of this plant is already operational. The company would invest a total of Rs 600 crore in both the plants in Kharagpur over the next couple of years, he pointed out. Meanwhile, on the occasion of 50 years' completion of its Kamarhattyplant, Mr Mazumdar said TIL would infuse fresh funds of Rs 50 crore at the plant over the next five years for replacement of old equipment.

TIL currently has a 60 per cent market share in the rough terrain and truck crane segment.

Slowing market

According to Mr Mazumdar, the infrastructure market is currently facing slow-paced growth. “This year is not going to be an easy year for us. Profitability will be very tough (in 2012-13). We are extremely cautious,” he said.
