Congress President Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday continued his attack on the RSS and the Narendra Modi government.

Rahul, while interacting with traders, small businesses and employees of the unorganised sector, as part of the ‘Jana Aashirwada Yatre’, at Davangere in central Karnataka, said Modi’s resistance to listening to the popular opinion on the economy and the tax regime (GST) led to various problems leading to bank scams.

“The Narendra Modi’s government has handed over the entire banking system to just 15-20 individual businessmen and ignored the pleas of small and medium businesses — who are the job-creators — and has ruined the economy. The BJP government at the Centre has been framing policies that suit big business houses,” he said.

“When the Congress comes to power, we will review the GST structure.” He alleged that instead of making GST simple, the Modi government complicated it and made it a ‘Gabbar Singh Tax’. “Congress believes in empowering small and medium businesses and simplifying GST.” Gandhi said huge bank scams happened in India for the main reason that the Modi government did not respect institutions such as the RBI. “Former RBI Chairman Raghuram Rajan is a respected economist across the world. He had advised the BJP government not to go for demonetisation. But you (the BJP) squeezed him out. The Finance Minister and the entire Cabinet did not have a clue. The Cabinet was locked up in a room before the GST was introduced,” he alleged.

On day two of the yatra, Rahul visited Sri Siddaganga Mutt, a prominent Lingayat Mutt in Tumkur, and sought the blessings of 111-year-old Shivakumara Swami.

The Congress president blasted the Prime Minister for allowing the RSS to interfere and dictate policy-making. “The RSS is running the government and not the elected party (BJP). One can see an RSS man sitting and giving orders in every Cabinet Minister’s office.”

Multi-culturalism

“The Congress believes in multi-culturalism, and gives people freedom of thoughts, food habits and ideology. The RSS/BJP spreads hatred or creates tension between communities to take advantage of the situation.

“This is the difference between the BJP and the Congress. They think India does not belong to all, while we want to take every community forward in building a healthy society.”

Dalits, minorities and tribals are protesting because they are being bullied and crushed, Rahul added.
