Danfoss India on Wednesday inaugurated a test lab at its facilities in Chennai to test air-conditioners and chillers for their energy efficiency standards. Manufacturers can get their products tested for compliance with standards. In course of time, through a tie-up with a certifying agency, Danfoss will also facilitate certification of products.

The psychrometric test lab, which can test the products under various environmental parameters to mimic the actual-use conditions, was inaugurated by Dr Ajay Mathur, the Director-General of the Bureau of Energy Efficiency. Danfoss India is a subsidiary of the Danish company, Danfoss, and manufactures a variety of products used mainly in energy efficiency—such as variable frequency drives.

The President of Danfoss India, Ravichandran Purushothaman, said that the company invested $ 10 million in creating the test lab.

Speaking to journalists after the inauguration, Dr Mathur said that ‘energy efficiency’ would become a key part of the energy system of India. Describing the ‘perform, achieve, trade’ regime brought in by his Bureau, Dr Mathur said that the first trades in ‘energy saving certificates’, or Escerts, would begin in a few months. Under the PAT regime, 478 companies, called ‘designated consumers’, across eight industries, were given energy efficiency targets and three years to meet them. The 3-year period ended on March 31, 2015, and currently the process of verification of their achievements is going on. Those who have done better than the targets given to them will be issued Escerts that they could sell on the energy exchanges to those who could not meet their targets. In course of time, the PAT regime will be extended to more companies.
