Leading tyre maker MRF on Tuesday defended its decision to install CCTV camera at its Tiruvottiyur factory as it was required under the law as also for the safety reasons.

The company’s statement came after a clarification sought on the ongoing strike by a section of workers at its Tiruvottiyur factory near Chennai.

The workers of the factory went on a strike from February 9 in response to the company's decision to install CCTV cameras. They also alleged that the management was delaying the wage settlement.

However, in a communiqué to stock exchanges the company said the strike was illegal and notice of the strike, including the reasons for the same, have not been served.

Clarifying on the wage part, the company said its efforts to reach an amicable settlement with the union had been inconclusive and as a result, the matter was pending for adjudication before the industrial tribunal in Chennai.

It also said the installation of CCTV cameras was for safety, security etc. The Union had sought to challenge the installation of CCTV cameras and their demands were also rejected by the Industrial Tribunal.

It may also be noted that the installation of CCTV cameras is a requirement under the prevailing laws in Tamil Nadu, the company added.

“The operations of the company are being partly continued with the help of workmen, who didn’t participate in the strike. The company is taking necessary steps to restore normalcy at the earliest.

The Tiriuvottiyur unit is one of the nine factories the company has across southern and western regions.
