Mahindra arm looks to engine outsourcing for growing biz

Mahindra Powertrain Division (PTD), the company under which M&M’s engines, transmissions and diesel gen-set business vests is in discussions with OEMs for whom it will manufacture engines on an outsourced basis.

PTD has also chalked out a plan for expanding into higher capacity diesel gen-sets, the first of which will be a 320 kVA genset due to be launched in the market in a year’s time.

The two strategies are aimed at quadrupling its turnover from around $200 million to $ 1 billion in the next six to seven years, Rajan Wadhera, President & CEO, Truck & Powertrain and Head Mahindra Research Valley, M&M said.

“We are selling engines to companies Mitsubishi Agricultural Machinery and TYM Korea, and have plans to enter into agreements with other OEMs with who we are already in discussions,” Wadhera said.

The engines would be used for applications like cranes, construction equipment, forklifts, fire fighting and marine amongst others he said adding that while many OEMs were looking to enter the Indian market the opportunity in the export market was also huge.

He pointed out that as the investment required to make engines Euro VI complaint was over Rs 500-600 crore and many companies would prefer to buy out the engines.

Elaborating on the gen set business, Wadhera said that the business that earlier grew mainly on the back of telecom towers would now be driven by segments like banks, building and construction, hospitals, hotels, and large housing societies.

While their Powerol brand of gen-sets currently ranges from 7.5 kVA to 200 kVA, the plan was to move to higher capacity generator sets. “This time next year we will launch a 320 kVA gen set with a 9.3 litre engine,” Wadhera said.

New diesel generators

Earlier, PTD launched an all new range of 125kVA Diesel Generators (DG) at a price of Rs 5.99 lakh across the country (local taxes and freight extra) and also introduced the 5-year super shield plan. The scheme which is applicable to all gen sets from 82.5-200 kVA promises its owners zero maintenance cost, repair charges, service charges and spare replacement costs for five years for an added one-time cost of Rs 1.25 lakh.

Designed at the Mahindra Research Valley in Chennai, this new range of diesel generators is 20% more compact and has a lower carbon footprint by saving on fuel while transportation. Further, the fluted silencer (a patented technology) developed by Powerol will reduce exhaust noise. There is also a reduction of 30% in overall weight of the canopy.
