A majority of workers at Renault Nissan Automotive India took leave on Saturday to avoid participating in a management-supported election to the workers’ union.

The first-ever union election at the automobile factory in Oragadam to the west of Chennai was conducted on Saturday. The management announced it fully supports the move to create an internal, representative body for employees. The workers will elect 11 members through a secret ballot process from a total of 24 contesting the elections.

However, earlier this year over 2,600 workers had joined the United Labour Federation, a registered trade union founded by V Prakash. The workers owing allegiance to the ULF’s branch in Renault Nissan submitted leave letters to the management and did not participate in the elections, said Prakash.

When contacted a company spokesperson said they will not be able to immediately respond on this issue. The elections were conducted and the results will be announced on Monday.

Prakash said the management has not recognised the ULF branch of the Renault Nissan Workers, Oragadam, which is the majority union representing the workers.

This independent union for which he is an advisor has a membership of 2,600 out of the 3,150 permanent workers at the unit.
