Swedish commercial vehicle-maker Scania today made its foray into the engine segment in India and launched its power generation engines.

Besides being leading manufacturers of trucks and buses, Scania is manufacturing industrial, marine and power generation engines and builds over 80,000 engines, making it the one of the most experienced engine manufacturers in the industry, Anders Grundstromer, Managing Director, Scania Commercial Vehicle India, told PTI here.

Integrated with user equipment, any Scania engine will contribute to strengthen the customers’ profitability and end-user satisfaction, with maintenance and repair contracts fully backed by Scania’s service network, he claimed.

Anders, who is also Senior Vice President, Scania Group, said the company has invested about Rs 25 billion to set up an industrial facility at Naraspur, about 40 Kms from Bengaluru.

This unit will build body of buses and trucks for Indian market and would become operational by the middle of November, he added.

The company has an ambitious plan to sell about 2,500 trucks, 2,000 engines and 1,000 coaches in the Indian market within the next five years, Anders said.

The official, who was here to launch the power generation engines with partner Mahindra and Mahindra, ruled out the possibility of entering smaller 16 to 18 seater vehicles segment.

Anders said the company was eyeing the premium segments, like Intercity coaches with 43 to 53 seat capacity.

Stating that the company was targeting both private and government business for selling buses, he said negotiations were on with almost all the State Governments for purchase of different types of buses, specially for Indian market.

The buses on offer are in three models, with purpose-designed coach for luxury intercity or charter travels.

The Company recently launched a new range of on-road haulage truck models specially adapted for the Indian market.
