With the launch of its latest sedan, Yaris, Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) said it expects its overall sales to grow by around eight per cent this year (from around 3 per cent currently).
The company sold 1.39 lakh vehicles last fiscal compared with 1.40 lakh units in 2016-17.
Innova Crysta, launched in April 2016, is the best selling product of TKM, with average monthly sales of 6,000 units. Available in both petrol and diesel variants, it is priced between ₹14.34 lakh and ₹21.57 lakh (all ex-showroom) and the company has sold 1.56 lakh units so far.
“We expect Yaris to be the second largest selling product after Innova Crysta,” N Raja, Deputy Managing Director, TKM, told reporters here.
Yaris is priced between ₹8.75 lakh and ₹14.07 lakh.
The company had started bookings of Yaris from April 25, and has received 60,000 enquiries, he said.
The company delivered 1,000 units of the Yaris on Friday itself. It will be manufacturing around 3,000 units every month at its plant in Karnataka. Raja said the company expects Toyota brand loyalists to be first buyers of Yaris.
TKM started production of Yaris last month and the company is looking forward to deliver around 4,000 units across the country by this month-end, he said.
Competitive segment
Yaris will compete with the likes of Honda City, Maruti Ciaz and Hyundai Verna in the mid-size sedan segment, a highly competitive segment with around two lakh buyers every year.
Globally, Yaris is one of the best-selling cars of Toyota and sells around three lakh units a year.
“We are entering a very competitive segment with Yaris. But with a host of industry first features, we are confident of the vehicle performing well in the market,” Raja said.
The new sedan is available only in petrol and comes in four grades, mated to a seven-speed CVT (continuous variable transmission) or six-speed manual transmission engine.
Yaris offers 11 first-in-segment features such as the power driver seat, seven SRS airbags, roof mounted air vents, tyre pressure monitoring system, front parking sensors and CVT across all grades, he added.
