Swedish luxury car maker Volvo on Thursday said that it will launch ‘India assembled’ plug-in hybrid of XC90 T8 sports utility vehicle from its Bengaluru plant by end 2019.

Apart from that, the company will roll out four more hybrid vehicles in the next three years, Charles Frump, Managing Director, Volvo Cars India, told reporters here.

“This announcement places electrification at the core of Volvo’s future business. It also paves the way for the complete phase out of combustion-engine-only models. The localisation of plug-in hybrids marks the future electrification for us,” he said.

The Swedish company had announced a few months back that every new Volvo from 2019 will have electrification whether it is in the form of mild hybrid, plug-in hybrid or full electric.

It has also said that there will be one-million electrified cars by 2025 and 50 per cent of the contribution will come from full-electric cars.

That is why in its commitment towards environment and electrified future, Volvo Cars plans to slowly phase out conventional powertrains and focus only on electrification.

“As a responsible luxury car company, we believe electrification is the future. However, till the time we have a supporting infrastructure, plug-in hybrids offer the intermediate solution,” Frump added.
